Piano strings are strung under tremendous tension, averaging 90 kilograms each. Hence, even if the piano is not played, the strings will gradually stretch with the passage of time and the piano will fall out of tune. Pianos need regular tuning at least once a year to keep them up to pitch and playing the correct notes.
When in tune, the strings vibrate at the same rate to produce a single note. When out of tune, there will be a wavering sound. This wavering will distort the note creating an uncomfortable sound. The competing strings may even cancel out the sound.
The average piano has 220 strings. Each string has a different pitch and frequency and must be tuned to the other strings on the piano. These strings determine the sound quality of your piano, so caring for them properly is essential. |
